Hot wheels: 5 ways to zip around town

With international borders remaining largely closed to leisure travel, residents in Singapore have answered the government’s clarion call to “rediscover Singapore” by checking out lesser-known neighbourhoods and dusting off their bicycles to explore scenic cycling routes around the island.

While the Little Red Dot boasts a world-class public transport system and navigating the roads is easy enough, the best way to really get to know a place is by pounding the pavement. You get to see and experience things you may not necessarily notice when in a vehicle. And you don’t just have to walk either – here are five wheel-based options to try on your next Singapoliday.

The Vespa vintage sidecars are available for group tours or private events

1. Vespa Sidecar

Zip around the city in style with Singapore’s first and only vintage Vespa sidecar tour. From exploring characterful alleyways in Chinatown to foodie haunts in Katong and Joo Chiat, fall in love with the Little Red Dot all over again. For the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, Singapore Sidecars are organising a tour that combines the best of Kampong Glam and the Civic District with a mooncake hunt. Lucky guests stand to win a staycation at Mandarin Oriental.

2. Rollerskates

While in-line roller skating might seem positively retro – think disco-themed roller rinks from the 70s – the sport has actually made a comeback in recent years, especially among the young. And why not? It’s fun and a great form of exercise, and it’s an excuse to get outdoors to enjoy some fresh air. If you’re new to the sport, hit up Skateline Skateschool, which offers a course that takes you from absolute beginner level to an advanced stage in 25 fun-filled lessons. You can choose from private lessons, join an open group or rope in a few buddies to form your own small group. Lessons are conducted at the verdant Bishan – Ang Mo Kio Park so you get to enjoy a scenic setting as you practise your spins and twirls.

3. Segway

Why walk when you can whizz around on a futuristic self-balancing device? O-Ride Singapore Mini Segway Tours takes you on photogenic tours around the Bayfront area, with plenty of opportunities to stop and snap photos along the way. If you prefer, you can book your own private tour for birthday celebrations or team building exercises. For families with young children, hop on to Sentosa’s popular Segway Fun Ride, which includes training and a short riding session for beginners. The signature 30-minute Segway Eco Adventure takes you on a languorous cruise along the sun-speckled beaches of Palawan and Siloso.

4. Trishaw

You can now combine volunteer work with a bit of sightseeing with Cycling Without Age, a local non-profit organisation that takes seniors out on a trishaw ride around the city. In a bid to alleviate social isolation among the elderly, this community of riders is connecting with the silver-haired generation through trishaw rides in different neighbourhoods across the island.

5. Cycling

Of course, the most accessible set of wheels to see the island would still be the humble bicycle. While you can easily rent a bike at places such as East Coast Park or even Pulau Ubin, for a cycling tour with a difference, try Let’s Go Bike. This bike tour company specialises in interactive tours that takes guests to different places of interest in Singapore. One of their most popular tours takes you on a four-hour meander around historical sites such as Chinatown, Singapore River, Boat, Clark Quay and Robertson Quay as well as City Hall.
