Oktoberfest this year is set to look a little different, what with the biggest beer festival in the world cancelled in its hometown of Munich. This annual two-week event typically sees upwards of 6 million visitors, all drawn to the festival’s convivial atmosphere of fairground rides, cheery guests dressed in traditional German garments and of course, the copious amounts of beer.
While we mourn the fact that the taps have been turned off there, there’s a silver lining. In Singapore, many establishments are still celebrating Oktoberfest (albeit with social distancing measures in place) with good cheer, scrumptious food and a carnival-like atmosphere. If you want to make a toast to this historical world-famous event, head down to any of these picks below and don’t forget to say: “Prost!”
Swiss Club
Oktoberfest celebrations are an annual mainstay in the Swiss Club’s events calendar, and this year, thankfully, is no different. Held from 19 September to 4 October at its Jungle Cove and Pavilion, feast on sumptuous German fare such as pretzels, crispy roasted pork knuckle with sauerkraut, an assortment of sausages on skewers and apple strudel for dessert. Its sharing board (good for three to four people) is perfect if you want a taste of everything. Wash that down with some Erdinger Weissbier or Stiftungbräu Lager that come in 0.5 litres, 1 litre or a massive 3.5 litre tower. You can opt to have the party at home too, as the restaurant also does takeaways. More information here.
Paulaner Brauhaus Singapore
Dining at this German microbrewery and restaurant is always a riotous affair, but it’s especially boisterous during Oktoberfest. The jocund atmosphere here is made even more welcoming with the restaurant decked out in traditional Oktoberfest paraphernalia (think: blue and white checked banners and streamers, beer steins and staff dressed in Dirndl or Lederhosen). From 12 September to 25 October, enjoy a special Bavarian menu featuring various platters served with free flow of freshly brewed Oktoberfest beer. The Oktoberfest platter (S$88++, inclusive of beer) is a particularly satisfying meal, with roasted duck, crispy pork knuckle, roasted chicken and German pork grill sausages served with bread dumpling, mashed potatoes, Sauerkraut and red cabbage. Frieda
A beautifully elegant German restaurant residing in The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore, this is the place to be if you’d rather have a quieter but nevertheless authentic German experience. Frieda will be paying homage to its Bavarian roots from 1 to 31 October with a free-flow buffet of German grub ($55++ per person, inclusive of a welcome pint of beer). Chow down on dishes such as the Obatzda cheese with Bavarian pretzels, German Weisswurst with sweet mustard, baked meatloaf with mustard and grilled Nurnberger sausage with mashed potato and sauerkraut. You can enjoy four hours of free-flow beer for an additional $50++ to really make it a celebration. From 12 September, there will also be a special weekend brunch experience made available every Saturday and Sunday, honouring the German and Austrian tradition of Frühschoppen (where friends gather in the late mornings at the pub, usually on Sundays). Various platters will be available, including one that features German cold cuts and cheese, roasted nuts and sourdough bread as well as a sausage platter with pretzel. Reserve here.
Brotzeit
To celebrate Oktoberfest, this popular German restaurant is rolling out a menu specially created by group executive chef Lorenz Raich, who joined the team in August 2020. The usual rich festival fare of hearty whole pork knuckle and sausage platters have been given a lighter touch, with more delicate dishes such as Bavarian meatloaf salad served with a pretzel, preserved and smoked spreads accompanied by salted pretzels, and roasted pig liver with poached apples and mash potatoes. For those who prefer something heartier, opt for the giant pretzel stuffed with either pork knuckle or farmer sausage. Drink up with the Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier that Brotzeit specially imported this year – Hofbräu is only one of six breweries in Munich that is allowed to serve Oktoberfest beer.
