À la Mort Subite

Despite its name, iconic city-centre café “Sudden Death” has been going strong since 1928. Managed by the founder’s great-grandsons, its decor is beautifully out of time, with creaky wooden booths, pillars and arched mirrors making a fine backdrop to a glass of Lambic or Gueuze. Traditional bars like this are one of the city’s must-dos, with the pick of the local “brown bars” (so called because of the cigarette stains on the walls) being bohemian hangout Au Daringman.
