Celebrated annually on the 8th of March, International Women’s Day is a day to reflect on progress made and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women who have played an extraordinary role in their communities. This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge, a strong call-to-action, with organisations pressing for more awareness against bias and for individuals to take action for equality.
International Women’s Day is made all the more special this year, given that 2021 is also the Year of Celebrating SG Women. Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli announced this in January, adding that the aim is to celebrate women’s progress and potential across society, as their contributions are integral to the Singapore story.
“We will celebrate our women’s multi-faceted roles across society, and we will also celebrate the men who help to debunk stereotypes, change mindsets and play an active role in supporting and uplifting women,” he said.
Here are ways you can commemorate and uplift the amazing women in Singapore and in your lives.
1. Buy a beautifully illustrated book
Local publisher Epigram Books is honouring the female trailblazers of Singapore with a new book, the Awesome Women of Singapore, a partnership between Epigram and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO). Featuring 160 women from the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame, including President Halimah Yacob, botanist Agnes Joaquim, Paralympians Yip Pin Xiu and Laurentia Tan, athlete Glory Barnabas and more, the book is a great snapshot of all the female lawyers, activists, soldiers, athletes and scientists who fought to break the mould and achieved progress for the Little Red Dot. The book is targeted towards children but features gorgeous illustrations by 10 female Singapore artists that will thrill even the young-at-heart. To commemorate International Women’s Day, Epigram is offering a 10% discount as well as a special print featuring one of the women in the book if you pre-order the book before 7 March.
2. Get engaged in a panel discussion
Catch the premiere of Encerrado – A Dance Film of Our Times by flamenco dance troupe Flamenco Sin Fronteras and Singaporean film director K Rajagopal and stay for an insightful panel discussion after the show. Hosted by Vivian Lim, a co-curator at Tedx Singapore and co-founder of Women in Asia, her dynamic guests for the night are politician-lawyer Sylvia Lim, academic and dance critic Stephanie Burridge and social harmony activist Nazhath Faheema who is the founder of hash.peace. Expect an engaging session as they ponder on the expectations of the Singapore woman. Happening on 8 March from 7.30pm to 9pm, the event is free but you’ll have to register for a spot. There will also be a pre-screening discussion with the cast and director of the film – they will share more on the collaboration and how the themes and characters relate to the multifaceted role of women in society.
3. Raise a glass
Zaffferano is celebrating the achievements and milestones of women with special offers at its rooftop Terrace Lounge. Available only on 8 March from 6pm to 10.30pm, sip on two glasses of sparkling wine, white or red wine while nibbling on savoury canapés and sweets (S$78++ per person) specially created for the occasion while admiring spectacular panoramic views. Bites include Hokkaido scallops crisp served with salmon roe; wagyu beef tartare served with confit quail egg; and sumac and foie gras sandwich with marsala gel. Sweet treats include yuzu and rich dark chocolate bon bon and Amalfi lemon and raspberry pavlova. In addition, from 8 to 15 March, every purchase of a bottle of wine from 6pm to 10.30pm will be served with a complimentary pizza worth S$25++.
4. Go for a run
To invite women to challenge themselves, race platform Spacebib is organising a virtual marathon that you can complete at your own pace. Simply register and complete 42.195km within the period of 31 March to 31 May 2021 (in a single activity or multiple activities) to receive race entitlements and bragging rights. If you signed up for the basic category, you’ll receive a physical finisher medal made with 100% recycled metal in premium gold colour plating that features a spinning pearl, an e-Badge, e-Bib and e-Certificate. The premium category entitles you to an additional women’s running singlet and finisher top. Do note that you will need to submit a screenshot of your tracking app or a photo of the treadmill dashboard showing your result in your Spacebib account.
5. Treat your gal pals to a meal
Gordon Grill is having a Ladies’ Night every Wednesday from 3 March to 26 May 2021 with specially curated four- and five-course set dinner menus (S$88++ and S$108++ per person respectively). The four-course menu comes with petite appetisers, two soups of Lobster Bisque and Double-boiled Poultry Consommé and a main course of choice (Grilled U.S. Tenderloin or Pan-Seared Norwegian Salmon), while the five-course set has an additional entrée of Pan-Seared Hokkaido Scallop with Shaved Black Truffle, Green Pea Mousseline and Tarragon Lemon Butter Sauce. End your fancy night with a sweet treat of Crepe Suzette flambéed table-side or opt for the Chocolate Red Wine Pear Tart served with passionfruit-mango sorbet and seasonal berries. On top of coffee and tea, you also get a complimentary glass of house red or white wine, or mocktail, with every set ordered.
6. Participate in a charity auction
Bid for items ranging from jewellery and art pieces to hotel stays and luxury bags at the SHE IS MORE – Charity Auction. Organised by IIX Foundation – charity dedicated to supporting women across all stages of their journey to empowerment – to celebrate International Women’s Day, proceeds will go towards IIX’s work in empowering underserved women. The auction is open for bids until 8 March.
7. Indulge in specialty cocktails
Three Singapore-based influencers will be stirring and shaking as guest bartenders for a special fundraiser organised by Chimichanga in collaboration with non-profit organisation United Women Singapore. Melissa Koh, Charlene Chew and Chantal Windley will be trained by Chimichanga’s in-house cocktail expert to concoct signature cocktails on 8 March for one day only. 50% of the sales proceeds from cocktails concocted by the guest bartenders will be donated to United Women Singapore. Chimichanga will also continue to offer an International Women’s Day Special Cocktail in the month of March, and 50% of proceeds from that cocktail will be donated to United Women Singapore.
8. Have brunch
Neon Pigeon is holding a special brunch for you and your lady friends on the 20th and 21st March that will allow you to have a great meal while channelling your inner Destiny’s Child and Spice Girls. Come dressed as your favourite ’90s girl group and get a surprise gift from Singapore-based eco store Omno. Neon Pigeon will be donating 25% of the brunch proceeds on both days to AWARE’s NextGen Fund to keep their services and programmes running beyond the pandemic, continue their advocacy work and nurture the next generation of change-makers.
Please check the establishments’ respective websites for opening hours as well as booking and seating requirements before visiting, and remember to adhere to safe-distancing measures while out and about.
