Book these: 10 best restaurants in Singapore for reunion dinners this Lunar New Year

While Lunar New Year is going to be a more subdued affair this year, that does not mean we should do away with a grand celebration with close family and friends to herald new beginnings. Reunion dinners are par for the course, and the list we’ve cobbled together promises an epic feast fit for royalty, from unique yu sheng (Cantonese-style raw fish salad) to luxurious ingredients loaded with auspicious symbolism. If you’re preparing a restaurant date of eight, this list has got you covered. Not to fret if you’re looking for a stay-home reunion instead as some of these dining establishments offer takeaway options as well.

1. Auntie’s Wok and Steam at Andaz Singapore

Make your Lunar New Year reunion dinner one to remember by dining while enjoying a scenic lookout high above. Located on the 25th floor, Auntie’s Wok and Steam serves up great views of the skyline alongside delightful tze char (comforting home-style food) dishes with Sze Chuan influences. Xi’an-born Chef Guo Qiang has come up with nine new dishes that fit the occasion. First, warm your bellies with a flavourful Fish Maw Soup with sea cucumber and conpoy that has been simmered for five hours.

Next, dig into mains such as the Steamed Marble Goby Fish that is blanketed in luscious homemade Nyonya sauce; and the Ginseng-braised French Whole Chicken that is made by braising whole cage-free French chickens in a pot for three hours with ginseng and unadulterated chicken stock that has been boiled for over five hours. Lunar New Year is incomplete without a celebratory prosperity toss – the yu sheng here is packed with a medley of superfood fruits, vegetables and seeds including kale, beetroot, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds and chia seeds, and topped with sliced Scottish smoked salmon.

Available from 25 January to 26 February 2021 for dine-in only, as a la carte or as part of its eight-course Lunar New Year set menu (from S$128++ per person, minimum four persons). For more information, visit here.

Jade’s Lunar New Year Family Feast

2. Jade Restaurant at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

Jade Restaurant’s executive chef Leong Chee Yen has created a spectacular yu sheng to celebrate the Year of the Ox with a flourish. Delicately crafted into an image of a spirited bull, the Premium Gold Rush Salmon Yu Sheng is dressed with a champagne jelly, shallot oil and kumquat dressing for a refreshing mouthfeel. If you’re in the mood for something simpler, the normal Gold Rush Salmon Yu Sheng is no less delicious and comes with calligraphy written by chef Leong.

Don’t miss dishes such as the highly popular Braised Bird’s Nest with Crab Meat, Crab Roe and Truffle Jus in Superior Broth that is belly and soul-satisfying; the Poached Wagyu Beef and White Radish Dumpling, shaped to resemble auspicious gold ingots; the mouth-watering Wok-Fried Boston Lobster with Preserved Duck and Ginger Spring Onion; and the Cornucopia of Wealth, an individually portioned lavish pen cai experience containing culinary treasures such as premium whole abalone, fish maw, sea cucumber, dried scallops, braised pork trotter, dried oysters and flower mushrooms. Prosperity Tuna Yu Sheng, Park Hotel Clarke Quay

3. Park Hotel Clarke Quay

Instead of the usual salmon yu sheng, the hotel, which offers scintillating views of the Singapore River, is mixing things up by topping the beloved multi-coloured salad dish with yellowfin tuna slices. Prepared tataki style and coated in sesame seeds and seaweed flakes, it’s believed that its red hue symbolises joy and luck. It’s the pièce de résistance for a dish that comes with a vibrant medley of white and green radish and carrot, purple cabbage, pickled vegetables, torch ginger flower and kaffir lime leaves. The dish is offered in all four set menus that have been curated by its banquet chef, James Wong.

For a truly successful year, feasting on fish is a must at all reunion tables. This is why the Steamed Red Garoupa with Yellow Bean Paste – the fish specially selected as its auspicious red skin amplifies luck for the year ahead – is also included in all menus. The whole fish is steamed with a savoury house-made yellow bean sauce that whets the appetite with a hint of heat from minced ginger, red chilli, and garlic. Depending on whether you go for a six-, seven- or eight-course meal, you might enjoy a Fragrant Crispy Duck that’s tender with a touch of heat, or the buttery Salted Egg Yolk Golden Tiger Prawn. The former is marinated with spices such as cinnamon stick, star anise, Sichuan peppercorn, ginger juice, and Chinese rice wine, steamed till soft and tender then coated in a batter and deep-fried, while the latter is deep-fried and tossed in an auspicious golden sauce of salted egg yolk with butter, garlic and curry leaves.

The set menus (six to eight courses; S$388 to S$768) are available from 29 January to 26 February 2021 for both takeaway or dining-in.
