With Singapore’s Phase 2 in full swing, lovebirds across the island are rejoicing, as that means plenty more date-night options. But instead of the usual “dinner and a movie”, we’ve rustled up a few ideas to surprise your loved one and make date night extra special.
For the foodie couple…
The past few weeks have seen the opening of several new restaurants, including the highly anticipated Luke’s Lobster, slated to open in August at Shaw Centre. Hailing from New York, this seafood joint will serve Maine-style lobster rolls, topped with mayonnaise, lemon butter and a secret seasoning. Can’t wait to get your seafood fix? Head to popular homegrown JUMBO Seafood, which has a special 50% discount on live Alaskan crabs and Australian lobsters from now till 31 August 2020.
Another New York import to hit our shores is Lucali BYGB, a famous Brooklyn pizza joint that appeared on David Chang’s hit Netflix programme, Ugly Delicious. Bond over your love of carbs with their addictive thin-crust pizzas, as well as a mouthwatering selection of calzones and pastas.
For something a bit more high-end, Corner House has re-opened with a brand new menu, dreamed up by newly appointed executive chef David Thien. Born and raised in Bordeaux, with Alsatian and Chinese-Mauritian heritage, the former L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon sous-chef brings his unique background to inventive dishes such as the umami-laden uni risotto and a satay-inspired offering where a slice of chicken breast is served with foie gras sauce.
For the barfly couple…
After the feasting comes the imbibing. Cocktail-loving couples will relish the new menu additions at VUE’s rooftop spritz-specialist bar – sip on refreshing cocktails paired with scrumptious charcuterie while drinking in views of the Marina Bay skyline.
Popular dual-concept bar Barbary Coast has also reopened its downstairs venue with a spiffy new menu. Now known as Deadfall II, the bar offers bold, multi-hued cocktails (great for Instagram), including the delicious Queen’s Park Swizzle, made with Plantation 3 Star Rum, lime, mint and Angostura bitters.
For a slice of high-end Tokyo bar culture, head over to Ginza-inspired D.Bespoke along Bukit Pasoh Road. Ranked 25 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, this quiet, discreet spot is the perfect space to cosy up as you sip on customised cocktails prepared by head mixologist Daiki Kanetaka. Also located along the same stretch is newly opened wine bar Rebel Rebel, which has an impressive collection of more than 200 labels – whites, reds, rosés and rare old vintages.
For the culture-loving couple…
Good news for art lovers – the Singapore Art Museum and National Gallery Singapore have partnered to launch a new project that brings together over 170 local artists and 10 other arts institutions to present a series of exciting exhibitions and programmes. Kicking off in August, these art experiences invite audiences to examine how our lives have been changed by the Covid-19 pandemic and encourage us to explore new ways of living.
To make the most of your art-filled weekend exploring Singapore’s Civic District, book yourselves into the Capitol Kempinski Hotel, conveniently located just opposite City Hall MRT Station. The palatial 155-room bolthole is currently offering a Super Special Staycation package, which includes a complimentary second night with a one-night booking.
For the outdoorsy couple…
After being cooped up for months, it’s only natural to want to venture into wide open spaces with your beloved. Dust off your hiking boots and head for semi-forgotten walking trails such as Seng Chew Quarry in Bukit Gombak or Tampines Quarry, located just opposite Bedok Reservoir.
If scurrying through muddy terrain is not quite your thing, head to the decidedly more placid offshore islands such as Lazarus, where you can enjoy quiet time on a rugged beach, or St John’s, home to the more than a dozen friendly cats. Don’t want to get on a boat? Tanjong Rimau is a secluded beach that can be accessed from within Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa. Walk the craggy shoreline and look out for tidal pools and mangrove trees where you’ll find marine creatures such as crabs and starfish.
For something a bit more high-octane, take to the trees at the popular Forest Adventure, which now features even more gravity-defying platforms, longer crossings and four zip lines across the reservoir.
For the couple that just wants to relax…
Of course, if you just want to spend quality time chilling with your partner, there’s no dearth of options. Indulge in a couple spa treatment at Aramsa The Garden Spa, located within the lush confines of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. For another urban garden experience, book yourself into a romantic staycation at Ramada by Wyndham Singapore at Zhongshan Park. Located just beside the serene Zhongshan Park, the hotel has recently rolled out a couple-friendly package that includes S$20 dining credit at the popular on-site seafood restaurant, New Ubin.
