These eco-friendly sanitisers make perfect travel companions

Hand sanitisers have become an everyday essential, with sales swelling more than threefold between November 2019 and February 2020, according to Kantar. Yet not all disinfectants are safe for daily use. Alcohol-based solutions, for instance, may break down the skin’s natural barrier and trigger allergic reactions over time.

New Zealand-based Zoono offers a healthier alternative. Founded by managing director Paul Hyslop in 2008, the company manufactures water-based hand sanitisers and surface disinfectants that are food-safe, environmentally friendly and harmless to children and pets.

The science behind the solution

How does Zoono work? The solution employs an antimicrobial technology, originally developed in 1930 by German researchers and re-engineered into a water-based product in 1980. Zoono further developed this technology to pioneer the Zoono molecule for its disinfectants. This non-leaching, non-corrosive creation – which works as a spray, wet wipe or mist – is made of purified, deionised water and a quaternary ammonium compound that comes from natural sand.

The microbe shield surface sanitiser forms an antimicrobial coating that bonds to surfaces

Upon application, the molecule attaches itself to a variety of surfaces and creates a layer of silane-based molecules that lasts up to 24 hours on the skin and 30 days on surfaces such as metal, glass, ceramic and even fabric. This protective barrier is filled with microscopic “pins” that attract and destroy pathogenic molecules on a cellular level, which then prevents pathogens from mutating and forming antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

Approved by the United States FDA and EPA in 2015, it has tested effective in combating viruses, fungi, yeasts and bacteria such as E. coli, norovirus, H1N1, black mould, listeria, MRSA and Covid-19. The London Underground has in fact put Zoono’s sanitiser to use to disinfect the city’s subway trains.

No obsessive cleaning necessary

As the dermatologically tested solution focuses on mechanical disruption, it won’t affect sensitive skin or cause excessive dehydration. Moreover, Zoono’s hand sanitiser remains effective even after you’ve washed your hands. Likewise, the surface sanitiser need only be applied once every 30 days.

Manufactured in New Zealand, the brand’s two flagship products come in a variety of sizes. The hand sanitiser can be purchased in travel-friendly, 30ml and 50ml bottles, as well as 250ml and 500ml versions, while the surface sanitiser is available in 300ml and 500ml bottles.

Other products in the pipeline include the Zoono Body Femme for feminine care, Zoono Body Skin Clear, which specifically treats acne, Zoono Body Odour Guard, an antibacterial deodorant, Zoono Body Foot Guard and Zoono Body Wound Cleanser.

Available in more than 20 countries including Singapore, this alternative sanitiser brand is an everyday staple worth investing in.
