How social media is helping spread positivity

Remember when you thought, “I wish I had more time to pursue that hobby.” Well now that time is here, so make the best of the lockdown period by learning a new skill. People are going out of their way on social media to offer a range of classes – be it cooking, music or painting. Here’s our pick of the best.

QUARANTINE COOKING

If you want to try your hand at cooking, baking or whipping up that perfect meal there is so much to choose from – be it Michelin star chefs giving cooking lessons on IGTV, those who teach healthy cooking or bakers who tell you how to make a cake with the minimum number of ingredients.

Shivesh Bhatia has been posting quick and easy baking videos on his YouTube channel Bake with Shivesh almost everyday. His series of recipes on quarantine baking can be made with the minimum number of ingredients that would be easily available at home.

Celebrity Chef Kelvin Cheung has been teaching interesting dishes that range from healthy to indulgent – steamed zucchini with eggs, chocolate chip Maldon salt ice cream sandwich cookie, peanut butter cookies and Marinara sauce.

Pawan Bisht has been giving hands-on lessons about the cuisine of his state. He does it all from scratch – which means digging that pit to set up a clay oven and cooking only with local ingredients. Chef Saransh Goila goes live with other chefs on Instagram every morning and has easy recipes on IGTV.

FITNESS

If you are missing your gym too much then you will be spoilt for choice – be it zumba, pilates, yoga or cardio – fitness experts are holding live sessions on Instagram and even giving personal classes on Zoom. Celebrity fitness trainer Yasmin Karachiwala makes live videos and you can see her working out with celebrities on her Instagram handle.

Actor Shilpa Shetty’s app @shilpashettyapp contains yoga videos that you can easily follow and she recently launched a 21-day weight loss plan. Pilates trainer Namrata Purohit has shared workout-at-home videos and on 12th April she has an interesting virtual retreat programme. Apart from these, apps like CureFit, CrossFit, Nike and Peloton are offering workout sessions.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

Virtual concerts are the order of the day with independent artistes and popular singers performing from their home to keep you entertained. Since the lockdown, those who have gone live include bands like ColdPlay, Backstreet Boys, singer Elton John and back home Sonu Nigam.

This trend will continue so watch out for Indian and international artists as you sit in your PJs. Task Force For Music & Arts in Nagaland has popular singers from the state performing live everyday at 7pm on their Instagram handle. For those who sleep late, there’s a show called the 10PM Instagram Show by That Comedy Club which is all about stand-up comedy – it will continue till the end of the lockdown. They have a Cringe Festival on 14th April for which you have to buy tickets because it is a pre-recorded show, where comedians share a few jokes, which will be uploaded on a private Instagram Community.

The Ultimate Pop Show is a virtual concert series from 6th to 12th April where a number of famous singers will go live each evening from their respective handles. This is a part of the Ultimate Quarantine Series on BookMyShow.

Live from HQ has two interesting online events – one of them is the Spoken Word Edition which is all about storytelling, shayari and poetry sessions by popular artistes till 12th April. Another is their Comedy Edition where stand-up comedians will make sure you end your day laughing.

NCPA in Mumbai has released archive footage of their previous performances on their YouTube channel which you can easily access. Even Broadway shows and Opera performances have gone online.

WORKSHOPS

Then there is painting, poetry and so many other things to do. A book store in Mumbai Kitab Khana has started live streaming poetry sessions by famous poets for all the days of the lockdown. Famous illustrator Rob Biddulph is doing drawing videos #DrawWithRob on Tuesdays and Thursdays on various platforms. It is ideal for children and even adults because it helps bring out the child in you.
