Bollywood movies that can take you around the world

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 everything has virtually come to a standstill and travel plans have gone for a toss. But when you get restless or the travel bug itches, take advantage of the work-from-home or self-quarantine and view the world with Bollywood stars in these films as you relax at home.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

This movie catapulted Spain onto every Indian’s wish list as we saw three friends going on a bachelor’s trip across the country fulfilling their dreams and facing their fears. Get a glimpse of deep sea diving in Costa Brava, enjoy the energy of the La Tomatina festival in Buñol, a town near to Valencia and go skydiving in Sevilla. The final scene – the bull run takes place in Pamplona. Draw up an itinerary as you watch the film and do all this when things get better.

Dil Dhadakne Do

If you have always dreamt of luxuriating on a cruise ship, then watch the crazy Mehra family embarking on a Mediterranean cruise with their friends to celebrate their anniversary. Get a peek into Turkey or revisit Istanbul’s popular spots like Taksim Square, Galata Tower, Eminonu promenade, Hagia Sophia and the Bosporus Bridge. Did you know that there is a deleted song in the film ‘Phir Bhi Yeh Zindagi’ that was shot in Cappadocia? Check it out on YouTube and enjoy the hot air ballooning.

Queen

Those who have gone through heartbreak know that the only thing you want to do is run away from reality and reach a place where nobody knows you. Kangana Ranaut taught us how to do that in style when she went for her honeymoon alone to Paris and Amsterdam. No other film showcases coming back to life like Queen – where she dances on the streets of France and Netherlands’ capital cities. It is said that they shot at 145 locations in 40 days in these two places.

Jab Harry Met Sejal

This film may not have been a big hit but if you want to explore Europe, it is well worth a watch. As Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma hop across from country to country in search for her engagement ring, the viewers are taken to the streets of Prague, Lisbon, Vienna, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Budapest – quite a few countries to tick off your list in two and a half hours.

English Vinglish

If you love New York and are getting nostalgic about it, then this film is for you. It showcases the Big Apple in the best possible manner as Sridevi joins classes to learn English when she comes to attend a wedding here. An entire song that is dedicated to the beating heart of the city, Manhattan, has been filmed across New York. Relax in your couch as the movie takes you to iconic spots such as Times Square, Central Park, Washington Square Park, Brooklyn Bridge and Fifth Avenue.

Cocktail

The allure of London never fades with filmmakers and umpteen movies have depicted the vibrancy and charm of the British capital. With this film let Deepika, Saif and Diana take you from one landmark to another – Borough market, Portobello Road, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Brick Lane, Battersea Park to Colville Gardens (Notting Hill). This movie will surely tempt you to book a ticket to London the moment the world is back to normal. But hold on. You can also see Cape Town in South Africa as the song ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’ was shot at Maidens Cove Beach.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

This iconic movie raised hopes in many young women that they too could find their Raj if they take a Eurail trip with their friends. One of the biggest superhits of the 90s, it sees Kajol and SRK fall in love when they meet during one such trip. Though it is supposed to be a journey through Europe, it mainly showcases London and Switzerland. She misses her train at Zweissimen railway station, runs down the Swiss Alps in Gstaad and Jungfrau in the song ‘Zara Sa Jhoom Lu Main’ and prays to the lord in St Mauritius church in Saanen. And one of the iconic scenes of the film where Raj says, ‘palat’ is filmed on Saanen Bridge.

Dil Chahta Hai

Yet another cult film, this one sees three friends having the time of their life on a trip to Goa. But a major portion has also been shot in Sydney in Australia. Several scenes and two songs with Aamir Khan and Priety Zinta have been shot at iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Milsons Point Railway Station, Waverley Cemetery, Macquaire Lighthouse and Luna Park so sit back and get a flavour of Goa and Sydney as you plan your next trip.
