Durga Puja starts from Mahalaya, the day the Goddess is supposed to begin her journey home, to the earth. But in spirit, Durga Puja starts even earlier. It commences on the day of bishorjon – immersion of the Durga idol into the river – and the kathamo or the wooden frame for the idol is brought back to the mandap. The countdown to Durga Puja actually begins on the day the biggest festival for 300 million Bengali speaking people of the world.
‘Asschhe Bocchor Abar Hobe’, or Once again, next year, is the chant that fills the air, and the hearts of the faithful when the curtains come down on the grandest show on earth.
Take a look at the festival going on in Kolkata with much fanfare and grandeur.
